However, Friday was the default release day in the UK from at least the early '60s til the early 80s, which was when labels gradually moved all to Mondays. EMI pioneered by moving to Mondays in 1980, and then the rest followed. The US moved to Tuesdays in 1988/89. Before that, there was no set day I believe.

Vinyl buyers are beginning to discover all the reasons we abandoned vinyl in the first place. I have about 3,000 discs and have sold off most of my vinyl. Never going back. I am trying to put a band together and I keep meeting musicians who have nothing to play my CD on. Boggles my mind.

The big one for me - DO NOT OVERCHARGE FOR YOUR ALBUM! SERIOUSLY! Yes, you might think that your digital album is worth 15USD and you probably want to try and recoup your costs, but such a high price is going to have me moving on to the next album before you can say 'Jack Robinson'! Remember, your music is competing against THOUSANDS upon THOUSANDS of similar albums from both 'established' underground artists on actual record labels and completely independent artists. You don't have to go for NYP but you can't price yourself out of such a crowded market.

I have an album of demos finished as high quality as I can get them. I'd like to pitch to a record label that I want to work with a producer and re-record all these songs. Is that something that happens? Any advice for me? This was a great video! Thank you so much!

I really feel like Kelefa Sanneh and Moderna Records spoke to me the most in this Episode: Kelefa says that - Labels don't necessarily have to have an Identity but also that SOME labels, especially independent labels -Independent Labels are often the starters in the process of a Musician's Career, giving them the groundworks and building blocks. -One of the most important things labels can do is the idea that "We're all listening to Everything" He follows up by giving an example: "if you're 'plugged in' to extreme metal in Europe, you can only get that from living, breathing, and working in that world" . oh and of course, - An Independent label is not the path towards riches, but Labels Should specialize and "get waist deep into some world" - In short, he says that working as a Label deeply invests yourself into a scene. Moderna: - A Record Label Needs to Stay Relevant A Label should gather artists and musicians together and create a "Scene", a connected universe for people to discover - Moderna Records was running for 4 years before they even started "streaming placements", making very little money, but continued the label, and artists discovered one another and became deeply connected with each other and Ingrained themselves into the scene, even outside the Label. There's a lot more they say, but these are some Essential Takeaways I feel resonate strongly with me.

The campaign being average on Groover doesn't mean anything, especially anything bad. I've been on both sides of the coin regarding Groover: as an artist/producer & as a curator. I felt disappointed when rejected until I started working for this music promotion site where they sent me off to review Groover tracks & I can tell you this: First off, even the smallest playlists get dozens of songs weekly & most playlists have a cap limit, so songs have to be rejected even if they're good. Secondly, most of the time, the purpose of Groover is to reject tracks as reviewing them & giving feedback is all you need to make money off it. Most people will review your track & give you feedback already knowing it'll get bounced. Thirdly, a lot of these curators don't really know anything about music. They just happened to get lucky or buy bots to have an active playlist; the feedback they give you is going to be generic at best. They're out there feeling like they're Anthony Fantano reborn but know little to nothing about music.

Heya, so I might be a little late to the party on this video, but I was wondering what the general consensus is on illustrations vs. graphic design for album covers? So for example a full on high fantasy illustration drawn from scratch for your album vs. a picture or two of the band edited together with some fancy effects? Is there generally a preference for one or the other? I was wondering if there is a demand for full from scratch illustrations or if most bands would rather just have foto edits, etc.

I lost 10 grand running a label. I checked out Inner Ocean and the music is trendy like lo-fi hip-hop beats to study to that’s always streaming on UA-cam. When I do ride share and some young people will show me an artist they like and it’s not good music, it’s just a trendy artist like Taylor Swift music or it’s rap that’s not that great musically speaking either, more like a social statement. If running a label you can try to be trendy or have a break out hit, otherwise it’s tuff to break even much less make a profit. Let’s say you’re a band and can create some local buzz or your a DJ that can draw an audience then it will be easier to actually *sell* music. If your label isn’t considered cool and you’re not considered cool then the chances of success are slim.

Question for you, do you think any of the songs on the playlists your pitching too have songs on their that are songs they discovered not via submission and shared? It seems like this is a grift for people who run playlists, how else do they monetise the work they do, where is the incentive for a curator? They only have so much space and seemingly reject most people for no good reason, actually even caught out for just stock responses from many stories I’ve read. Also, is this how you personally engage with music? I don’t know anyone in the real world that finds music through playlists like this, I suspect the listens on a lot of them are also botted to draw more musicians to submit music to the playlist and continue the grift. The terrifying truth is there is no magic formula, make music with your heart and to the best of your ability, make sure you have some visual content for it, upload and hope for the best.

A couple of questions- this will be my first release and I don't have a spotify or youtube page yet. I was going to use CDBaby and they assign an artist YT page. Do I need to create them myself now, or wait until the first song is released? Also, where do you get that catalog number? Is it just a random number?
